AppleBlossom GNU/Linux Operating System Distribution - Project: AppleBlossom GNU/Linux Operating ...
Welcome to AppleBlossom!
My email (the main support email) is organixpear at gmail dot com
Status: Open Beta Starts October 24, 2011.
I am the author of a GNU/Linux distribution that I call "AppleBlossom GNU/Linux." AppleBlossom is a new GNU/Linux distribution which is going to be released on the GNUnet network soon. The current version is code-named "Fuji." Most features are implemented, some are not. Here is a list of general features:
An emphasis on using the latest software: I like using the latest stable kernel as regularly as possible. I also like to use the latest GCC and EGlibc when feasible.
An emphasis on building for the latest and widely used hardware: I only build x86_64 multilib AppleBlossom for 64-bit hosts.
Security in mind: Shorewall and IPtables, PAM and Kerberos are all configured to protect you from threats on the Internet from your first boot.
Unlike the competition: You will be amazed at WindowMaker-crm working in tandem with GNUstep.
OOB functionality: I spend alot of time configuring a kernel so that it works nearly everywhere and supports everything it is supposed to support. AppleBlossom is also prepared for you to 'taint the kernel' and use proprietary drivers if neccessary.
I could go on but I think you will really like AppleBlossom. There will soon be a feature ISO available on the GNUnet network. Most days the ISO fits on a DVD. For those without the hardware, time, or persuasion for making a DVD can grab the tarball which contains files that you can dump on a USB-key FAT32 formatted partition. The tarball also comes with files useful for making the FAT32 partition bootable.
As I already mentioned the ISO and tarball are available on the GNUnet network. In order to download the files simply search for "appleblossom" and the available files will be displayed.
AppleBlossom has an integrated build system and comes with all the source code for the base userland and X.org. AppleBlossom is a mostly a source based distribution. AppleBlossom uses 'pkgutils' from Crux for package management (much like 'ports' from BSD - not so similar to 'portage' from Gentoo) so you will have access to an ever-growing collection of packages in addition to source-based ports. Also, the integrated build system is nothing more than a few bash scripts that work closely with the package management system. The build system is not a complicated idea but it is somewhat sophisticated in terms of it's implementation and it's results. You may find it useful at some point, and then again, you may never use the scripts at all.
I use the Cross Linux from Scratch Book to put the distro together along with my 10+ years of experience as a hacker. I also reference the Cross Beyond Linux From Scratch Book on a regular basis. I can be found in various channels on Freenode with some regularity as I will ocassionally ask or answer a question or two there.
Some important notes about the current state of AppleBlossom:
AppleBlossom uses GRUB 2 and a comes with a basic /boot/grub/grub.cfg.
Pay special attention to the /etc/fstab file so that it matches your configuration.
Please change the default password for root (which is 'toor') to something more secure.
The current state of AppleBlossom should be considered experimental. In my experience, however, it is quite stable.
Q. What's the purpose of this page?
A. The purpose of this page is to inform people about the availibility, features, and release of AppleBlossom GNU/Linux "Fuji". AppleBlossom is available on the GNUnet network.
Q. What is in store for AppleBlossom in the future?
A. AppleBlossom does not just encompass a GNU/Linux distribution (Currently "Fuji"). Outside of providing new distribution versions and updates to already released distributions, I make and play games. I find them entertaining and relaxing..
